Join us, for one night only, as we shine a light on binaries, a light so bright that these binaries begin to warp. New oppositions emerge, new couplings: presence versus abscess, versus abyss, versus obsess. There are ones now, but no zeroes, the zeros look like figure eights.

Doors are open that can’t be closed; they will have to be something else. Our writers are either asleep or in wait, following a compass that only shows North or death. Come along as we navigate this frontier. Let us take you somewhere new.

ENTER>text is a living literary journal, an immersive event where the audience is activated to seek out unique encounters with text throughout the whole of Concord.

We’re taking Concord on the road to research the connections between art, social spaces, and education. And we’re Kickstarting to do it. We’re going to buy a school bus to convert into a mobile laboratory, gallery, and gathering place, where community organizers, teachers, and artists can connect and create.

The Utopia Project: LA / Adelaide

An exploration of utopian idealism and dystopian realism, through artistic collaboration and cohabitation, in Los Angeles, CA and Adelaide, SA

From late June to late July the Concord members will be in exile on a big bus to New Orleans. In their absence Concord will be taken over by Australian Artists and one from Finland too!

These collaborators are seeking expressions of interest to be involved in the Utopia Project and possibly undertake a residency at Concord during this period. We are inviting proposals of what you may wish to contribute to the project and expressions of interest to be involved in the residency at Concord during this period. Note: residents will be asked to contribute to the cost of the residency but not to the cost of the project – unless of course we all have to buy pizza or crayons.

Please submit a brief proposal / expression of interest by the 5^th of June, 2013. We will notify you of the outcome very soon after this date. We encourage freethinking, ridiculous and brilliant proposals that make a lot, or no sense – after all, the project is about Utopia!!

A Dance-Research-as-Performance Piece, is intended to study the way the audience, perceives and engages with the performer on the neurological level. She will encourage the audience through dance to witness without judgement, be curious and literally/not so literally be moved. After 15 years of studying performance, and the body as a medium for social change, Isa Leal is hitting the road on a 5 month National Tour. These studies are all for her book, Authentic Vehicle: Empathy in Performance and Personal Practice.

I want to have a life outside of art. A life where I am not constantly thinking critically, emotionally, or poetically about the events, the circumstances, or the nature of things that surround me. A life where I am not constantly performing. Where I don’t have to be sharp and attentive, where I don’t have to create relationships with other free-thinkers, in the never-ending quest to find something interesting and relevant. I want to have a life where I can accept everything. Where I can sit and wait. Where I can have steady employment. I can live outside of the city. I can find pleasure in stability. I can plan for retirement. But I can’t— I live here.

Our space exists in a state of flux, sometimes private often public: the most public parts in the space can easily become private while the most private things can become far too public. We can’t resist this. We invite this. For this event we have invited several artists to interrogate this indeterminate space. Gallery meets bedroom. Private conversation becomes a street scene, a traffic jam. Spaces collapse, and dishes even, into one with a collective hum. From an observation deck you can see what is ours, and what’s ours is yours.

‘The Streets Tell A Story The Stage No Longer Tells’ is centered around the 1993 crime drama film Falling Down, as part of a two month residency at Concord – Smith revisited the main locations of the film re-shot the scenes with no actors just the spaces as they now stand. Some of the locations remain much the same whilst others have changed dramatically.

In addition to this, a collection of photographs of a type of architecture in the sidewalks that Smith has become fascinated with: on first appearance these ‘sculptural images’ look like signs or grids, but are places where trees either have been or will be planted. A physical tension is present between nature and the city. Consisting of 12 photographs these images map out another kind of architecture of a different perspective on the street as a stage. Working across media but with the photographic image at the core of his practice Smith works between the outside, multitudinous public space and the inside individual private space of spectatorship. Seeking out ‘spaces of looking’ he situates his work in between the ideology of the public sphere and intimacy of looking.

Nicholas Smith (b.1982 Liverpool, UK, based in London and Los Angeles) gained his MA from the Royal College of Art, London in 2012. Recent and forthcoming exhibitions and projects include; Curator of Relief publication, launch June UK (2013), photographic essay for ‘Concord 1’ USA (2013) and group exhibition Territory; Liverpool Independents Biennial, UK (2012)

Concord is looking for an intern to assist in the day to day running of Concord. Tasks include flying, safety drills, assisting passengers with heavy baggage and generally ensuring passengers enjoy their flight. Should be resilient to the cold, available two half days a week, enjoy laughing and have a keen interest in art, organizing exhibitions and programming events. The right candidate will be studying art or art history or life philosophy, should be good at researching, and brainstorming. You might have a camera and be able to document the many bizarre and weird happenings of Concord. For your wonderful time we will trade secrets, our humble experience, extensive creative agency, introductions to our fabulous network and the possibility of becoming a part of the Concord Collective.
